SAN FRAN DISCO....DAN ANTHONY THE ROCK STAR!

It was recently bought to my attention that Tonner Dan Anthony is on the road to rock‘n’roll stardom with his band ‘San Fran Disco’.

There is a big Old Brighton feel to their band. San Fran Disco consists of Nick Acquroff on the keys and lead vocals, Dan Anthony on the guitar and backing vocals and Kyle Tickell (younger brother of last years U19 B&F Tim Tickell) also on the guitar and backing vocals.

Nick and Dan were in the same year at school and finished in 2005 while Kyle finished a year later in 2006.

Prior to San Fran Disco forming Nick and Dan performed as the ‘Nick and Dan Band’ where they would play a variety of cover songs and originals at a variety of gigs. They have performed on numerous occasions at footy club functions, lunches and worked up a cult following with their famous afternoon Sunday Sessions at Mothers Milk in Bay St.

The duo performed for roughly 2 years but were forced to put their pursuits of a musical career on hold when Nick went travelling overseas.

Recently the band spent 4 days at Woodstock Studios in St Kilda to record a 5 song EP. With their regular drummer overseas they managed to get Michael Barker (John Butler Trio and Black Sorrows) to fill in on drums. It just so happens that Michael is a close friend of Eddie Rayner (Producer of Split Enz) so the band was in good hands.

Dan describes working with such accomplished people in the music industry as ‘daunting’ at first but after playing a few songs the nerves disappear and the boys were in their comfort zone and doing what they do best. The input from Eddie and Michael on the songs has been significant and they band are deeply thankful.

Most people out there are aware of a radio station called Triple J, it’s on 107.5 if you don’t. For years now they have been a huge supporter of local musical talent and have a section dedicated to bands starting out known as Triple J Unearthed. This hopefully is going to be the first step in a long and successful career for our aspiring Rockstars to be. You can listen to or download 3 of San Fran Disco’s songs via the Triple J website in the Unearthed section, the bands music genre is classified as ‘Indie’. http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=33289

The 3 songs available to listen to or download are Laugh First (87th on weekly overall chart this week, and 19th on the Indie chart), Dim the Lights and my favourite Fan the Flames. The charts are calculated on how many hits the songs get each week, so support the boys and start listening to their music at work, at home or you can download the free I Phone application for Triple J unearthed. They are definitely worth a listen and the band would love the support.

Triple J has been responsible for introducing listeners to famous bands and artists such as Silverchair and Daniel Johns (bedded Nat Imbruglia…well done!!), Powderfinger and countless more great Aussie acts. The band is trying to win spots via Triple J to get on music festival bills such as Big Day Out and other well known music events.

Whats more remarkable once you listen to the songs is that Dan and Kyle are both sell-taught on the guitar and Nick has only recently had lessons on the Keyboard. The boys definitely have talent.

When I first googled San Fran Disco the Urban Dictionary forbid me from accessing that website from work, luckily the I Phone I have allows me to view anything and their definition is a rather explicit sex move. According to Dan, who refers to himself as Atilla the Pun it was just a play on words and they needed a name for the EP.

To date their shows have not included biting the heads off bats, Bloods vs Crips gang violence or Britney Spears style miming. We will keep you up to date with any upcoming performances however if you want to book the band for an event best to send them an email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Good luck boys!!

Go Tonners!!
