Senior Leaders Announced at Pre-Season Camp

The Old Brighton pre-season camp was a huge success on the Mornington Peninsula over the weekend. Over 70 players from our Senior Men’s, Women’s and Under 19’s playing groups participated in fitness drills, match-simulation and team meetings to set the tone for the year ahead.

The boys met at Flinders and had a very solid hit out, highlighted by a 4-quarter scratch match umpired by Nuts and Soupy. It was great to see some of the young guns from last year’s Grand Final side and first year players mix it with our senior boys.

The girls met in Portsea and were put through their paces by Granty and Dicky Smith with running and football drills followed by match practice in the morning. They took training one step further than the boys with a kayak and beach session led by Peter Flockart in the afternoon.

The training was exceptional, however the highlight of the camp for many was the team meetings, goal setting and bonding sessions in the afternoon. It was great to get our first and second players together with our senior side, establish goals and standards for the year and set the tone for the culture the playing and coaching group are building for our club.

In those sessions, it was the privilege of Nuts and Granty to announce the Senior Leaders of the Men’s and Women’s Team for 2023.

OBGFC Senior Men’s & Women’s Leadership Groups

Harry Hill was named as captain for the seventh season in a row. Harry leads the club exceptionally well and will equal club legend Jon Perret as the longest serving skipper at year’s end.

Tom Fisher and Mikey Karayannis are returning as Vice Captains. The boys continue to be fantastic leaders of our playing group, both on and off the field in supporting our players.

The leadership group has been extended with an exciting injection of youth. Hamish Dick and Tom Yorgey were announced as Vice Captains, making it a group of four in 2023. Both Hammer and Yorgs have been developing leaders within the group throughout their careers and are ready to take on this responsibility. Congratulations boys!

For our Women’s side, India Tait and Cat O’Brien are returning as co-captains for the third season. Both foundation players who started their careers in 2017, Cat and Indi have been instrumental in the success of our women’s football program over the last 6 years. Their leadership on and off the field has been a huge boost for our entire club.

Our Women’s leadership team has also been reinforced, with Sienna Courtney and Chloe George being announced as Vice Captains for the first time. Sienna and Chloe have lead by example and are a reflection of the great culture we have in our Women’s side. Both are future captains of the footy club and will be amazing support for Cat and Indi this season. Well deserved girls!

A huge congratulations and thanks to all involved in the camp. Our club relies on the passion and support of volunteers, and once again they came through to make it a successful weekend for our fantastic playing group.
