Two Solid Wins as OBGFC win back Perrett Cup

Senior Men

Old Brighton 11. 10. 76 def Uni Blacks 6. 6. 42

In wet and trying conditions out at University Oval, the Seniors opened their season with a solid win against Uni Blacks who have re-joined Premier Division following their Grand Final appearance in B Grade last year.

The highlight of the day was welcoming 5 young debutants into the side: Sam Flockhart, Jordy Hayter, Cam Hathway, Jamie Hope and Luca Macnab. All boys earned their spot in the side over pre-season and played their role well. The start of 5 long, successful careers at the club!

The Blacks kicked the first 3 goals of the game in the opening 6 minute, before our boys worked their way into it and eventually led by the half time break. A strong 6 goal third quarter set up the win, spearheaded by Ben Jarick in ruck, skipper Harry Hill in the middle, and Alfie Jarnestrom across the wing. Up front it was Jamie Hope who shined, kicking 3 goals in his debut.

Our attention moves to our first home game of the season against Old Haileybury, who almost knocked off reigning Premiers SKOBs on the weekend and will be a fierce match-up at Brighton Beach Oval.

Best: H. Hill, A. Jarnestrom, B. Jarick, T. Yorgey, J. Hope, J. Hayter.

Goals: J. Hope 3, A. Jarnestrom, T. Burnell, A. Edgar, F. Campigli, C. Hathway, H. Hynes, H. Reynolds, F. Gregson

Reserves

Old Brighton 9. 18. 72 def Uni Blacks 0. 6. 6

The Reserves had an emphatic win in the season opener against Uni Blacks, with the only blemish being their inaccuracy in front of goal.

The boys had a great mix of youth and experience, and looked to implement a fast moving game plan which proved too much for the Blacks from the get go.

Ben Pryor and Ben Branson were lively up forward, and the Murray brothers starred across the backline. It was pleasing to see so many players look ready to step up to Senior football when inevitably called upon in season 2023.

Next week the boys will be out to celebrate Tom Skewes’ 150th game. Back at South Road, it promises to be a great day for the club and one its favourite sons.

Best: B. Pryor, F. Murray, C. Tremlett, N. Murray, E. Tait, D. Lynch

Goals: B. Branson 3, B. Pryor 2, E. Tait, M. Freeman, D. Lynch, L. Filipovic
